Political differences take ultimate toll on elderly couple

After 14 years of marriage, a couple here split up when the husband allegedly could no longer convince his wife to join his political party.Yahya Ibrahim, 78, divorced religious teacher Che Hasnah Che Ahmad, 61, both of Kampung Chabang Tiga in Chetok, in the Lower Syariah Court yesterday.

She alleged that her husband had accused her of deviating from Islam for not supporting his party.
Che Hasnah, who claims to be a staunch supporter of Barisan Nasional, said her husband was an ardent follower of PAS.She said that although he had for years tried to "convert" her to join PAS, the issue that broke the camel's back was when she atttended a ceramah by former PAS vice-president Datuk Dr Hasan Ali in Tanah Merah on June 11.

"I did not know I was attending the ceramah by Hasan Ali because I merely took a lift to the venue from a friend, who said there would be a lucky draw there," she said, adding that Yahya had given her permission to attend the event.

Che Hasnah, who teaches the Quran to about 100 students, was formerly the Chabang Tiga Wanita Umno branch chief. She said Yahya had never questioned her support for Barisan until lately, when he travelled frequently to Kota Baru to attend PAS ceramah.

"Everytime he comes home, we would get into an argument. Before filing for divorce, he told me he no longer wants to live with me and would move to live with his children from his first marriage," she told reporters outside the courthouse.

Earlier, after Yahya pronounced the divorce, Syariah judge Mohd Hafiz Daud ordered him to pay Che Hasnah RM200 (S$81) for mutaah (a gift for the wife after divorce) and RM600 for edah (financial sustenance for three months before the annulment of marriage).

Slain amok said to be a deviant

Pytrejaya - Samurai sword-wielding Khalil Afandi Abd Hamid, who died after he was shot twice by police in the Putrajaya breaching drama, was believed to belong to a deviationist sect and mentally unsound as well.
Police are investigating which sect he belonged to, said city police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohmad Salleh.

Writings on Khalil's blog seemed to indicate that he was very much involved with the sect.
"We have yet to establish his links with the sect, including who the leader is and how many followers belonged to the sect," he said during a press conference at city police headquarters yesterday.
DCP Mohmad said it was too early for police to comment further, and appealed for information on Khalil or the sect.

Khalil and a woman, later identified as 28-year-old Muhdalina Ahmad, had walked towards the Prime Minister's Department complex and whipped out samurai swords on Monday.
In the half-hour drama that followed, they held a policeman hostage, attacked a few others and smashed cars before police opened fire at the duo to subdue them.
Khalil later died in the hospital while the woman is still receiving treatment.
DCP Mohmad also defended his men's actions in shooting the two, saying the shots were meant to disarm them and that the shots were aimed at the arms and legs.
There was no intention to shoot to kill, he added.
DCP Mohmad said police had recovered two samurai swords and a meat cleaver which was inscribed with jawi characters.

"We will wait for the post- mortem results to ascertain the cause of death," he said.
Meanwhile, attempts to interview Khalil's family for comments were futile.
Reporters who attempted to speak to the man's family in Taman Medan in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, were told to leave them alone. When reporters persisted, one of them was almost assaulted.
Bernama reported that Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the security of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was not compromised at any time during the amok drama at Complex B of the Prime Minister's Department.

"I can confirm that the Prime Minister's security was not compromised at any time. The police are still investigating the motive, links, plans, etc.
"Give them time to do their job," he said in a posting on his Facebook page yesterday.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) had been instructed to find out whether the group was religious-based or involved in other teachings.

BAHAR FOUND RM133,300 CASH

Tawau Sabah, Truck driver Bahar Rauf believes there is money in discarded cardboard boxes. But seeing RM133,300 (S$53,168) in cash was beyond his imagination!

The money was stacked in three packages between some boxes that he collected on Friday, as part of his routine chores to gather discarded items for recycling to earn some extra income for the family.
However, honesty got the better of the 55-year-old furniture shop truck driver, who decided to hand over the bounty to the police. They have since located the rightful owner.

Bahar said he started folding the boxes upon reaching home."I realised one of the boxes was heavier than the rest. When I opened it up, I was stunned to see three large packages containing the money," he said, adding that he called his family to tell them of his find."I felt it was not right for us to keep it and decided that it should be returned to the rightful owner," he said, adding that he took the money to the Tawau police headquarters.

Tawau police chief Asst Comm Ibrahim Chin confirmed Bahar had handed the money to the police.
"We have traced the owner and handed back the money to the person after the verification process," he said, declining to give details about the owner or how the money was discarded.
He, however, advised the public to be careful when handling large sums of cash.

TUMOUR 15KG

Two-year-old Jesus Gabriel from the northern state of Durango, Mexico was born with a tumour on the right side of his body.

The tumour was benign, but as he grew, the tumour grew as well. In just two years, the tumour had grown to about half the size of the boy, severely restricting his movements.

Medical pictures show that the lump was about the size of a basketball, dwarfing the young child.
At the time of the tumour's removal on June 14, the mass weighed a hefty 15kg - more than Jesus himself, who weighed just 12kg.

The operation, carried out at the La Raza Medical Centre in Mexico City, took a team of surgeons about 10 hours to remove the huge lump. Pediatric surgeon Jaime Zaldivar led a group of Mexican doctors to remove the giant tumour.Doctors removing the lump discovered that the tumour had grown to such a weight that it was cutting off the boy's flow of oxygen.

Dr Gustavo Hernandez, director of paediatrics at the hospital, said that they believe that it was the first time Mexican doctors had removed a tumour larger than the person it was attached to.
Freed of his burden, Jesus is reportedly recovering well at the hospital. Doctors expect that Jesus will continue to make a strong recovery.
